Can moles be removed with CO₂ laser?

What does the skin look like immediately after CO₂ lesion removal?

The immediate post-treatment appearance is not the final result. Depending on lesion depth, the treated area may initially appear red, raw or slightly depressed before the skin repairs and remodels.

Mild redness and a visible treatment depression can occur immediately after removal of a deeper raised lesion. This is not the final healed appearance.

Why can the area look deeper immediately after treatment?

A raised lesion may extend deeper than the surrounding skin surface. During layer-by-layer CO₂ ablation, the visible lesion is removed to an appropriate depth while the surrounding skin is preserved. Immediately afterward, the treatment site can therefore look depressed. Over the following weeks and months, re-epithelialisation and tissue remodelling gradually change the appearance.

1. Re-epithelialisation

New surface skin begins to form across the treated area as the wound closes.

2. Collagen remodelling

The skin continues to rebuild its supporting tissue after the surface wound has closed.

3. Texture maturation

Colour and texture can continue to improve for weeks or months after treatment.

1–2 weeks: the wound generally closes and new skin forms.
Several weeks: pinkness or redness may remain.
Several months: colour and texture may continue to mature. Individual healing varies according to lesion type, size, depth, skin type and wound care.

Keep the wound clean

Follow the clinic’s instructions regarding keeping the area dry, cleansing and wound dressing.

Do not remove the scab

Allow crusting or scabbing to separate naturally. Picking can increase the risk of pigmentation and scarring.

Protect new skin

Once appropriate, protect the healed area from excessive sun exposure and follow the doctor’s skincare advice.
