CO₂ Laser
Aftercare Guide
Aftercare for mole, skin tag and benign skin lesion removal. Learn when to keep the wound dry, wash, use cleanser, exercise, apply makeup and protect the healing skin.
The first few days matter most
Small and deep wounds have different timelines.
Let crusting separate naturally.
Follow the individual instructions provided after treatment.
Once the wound is closed, sun protection helps reduce pigmentation risk.
How should I care for my skin after CO₂ laser mole or skin tag removal?
The goal is to keep the wound clean, avoid unnecessary moisture or friction during early healing, prevent scab picking and protect the newly healed skin.
Small superficial wounds and larger deep wounds need different aftercare.
BAC(BANGKOK AESTHETIC CLINIC) generally advises keeping small or superficial CO₂ laser wounds dry for about 3 days, while larger or deeper wounds may need to remain dry for about 7 days. After that, water and cleanser are gradually reintroduced. The exact plan depends on the size, depth and location of the treated lesion.
What happens after CO₂ laser lesion removal?
Healing speed varies, but these are common stages after focused CO₂ laser removal.
Immediately after
The treatment site may look pink, red, raw or slightly depressed. This is not the final result.
Early wound healing
Mild redness, crusting or scab formation may occur. Keep the area dry according to the clinic’s instructions.
New surface skin
Small wounds begin to close. Larger wounds may still require careful dressing and cleansing restrictions.
Colour & texture mature
Temporary redness or pigmentation can gradually improve as tissue remodelling continues.
When can I wash after CO₂ laser mole or skin tag removal?
This is one of the most common questions after lesion removal. BAC Clinic uses different guidance for small and larger wounds.
Small / Superficial Wound
Large / Deep Wound
Important
These are BAC Clinic’s general aftercare guidelines. The instructions provided for your individual wound take priority because treatment depth, lesion size and location may change the recommended timeline.
What should I do — and avoid — after CO₂ laser removal?
✓ Do
- Use the clinic-provided medication or ointment as instructed.
- Keep any dressing clean and replace it according to advice.
- Wash your hands before touching the treated area.
- Allow crusting or scabbing to separate naturally.
- Protect healed skin from strong sun exposure.
- Contact the clinic if you are unsure whether healing is normal.
✕ Avoid
- Picking, scratching or peeling off the scab.
- Scrubbing or exfoliating the healing area.
- Applying acids, retinoids or irritating skincare directly on the wound.
- Swimming while the wound is still open.
- Sauna or heavy sweating during early healing.
- Applying makeup directly over an open wound.
Makeup, exercise, showering and skincare after CO₂ laser
Makeup
Do not apply makeup directly over an open or crusted wound. Resume only after sufficient healing and according to your doctor’s instructions.
Exercise
BAC Clinic generally recommends avoiding heavy exercise, sauna and excessive sweating for around 3–5 days after lesion removal.
Showering
You may shower while protecting the treated area from water during the prescribed dry period. Avoid direct high-pressure water on the wound.
Sunscreen
Do not rub sunscreen directly into an open wound. Once the surface has healed sufficiently, sun protection becomes important for reducing post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Skincare actives
Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and strong active skincare on the treatment site until the skin has healed.
Swimming
Avoid pools, hot tubs and natural bodies of water while the wound is open because prolonged moisture and contaminants can interfere with healing.
Should I remove the scab after mole or skin tag removal?
No — let it come off naturally.
Pulling or peeling off a scab too early can reopen the wound and may increase the risk of bleeding, inflammation, pigmentation or a more visible scar. The crust acts as temporary protection while new surface skin develops underneath.
Normal healing vs when to contact the clinic
Usually expected
- Mild redness
- Pink skin around the wound
- A small scab or crust
- Mild temporary sensitivity
- A slightly depressed appearance immediately after deeper removal
- Temporary darker colour during healing
Contact the clinic if you notice
- Increasing pain rather than gradual improvement
- Increasing swelling or spreading redness
- Persistent bleeding
- Pus or unusual discharge
- Fever or feeling unwell
- Any healing change that concerns you
Why can the treated area look darker after it heals?
Temporary post-inflammatory pigmentation can occur after any procedure that creates controlled skin injury, including CO₂ laser lesion removal.
Inflammation
Healing skin can temporarily produce more pigment after inflammation.
Skin type
Some skin tones are more prone to visible post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Sun exposure
UV exposure after healing may make pigmentation more noticeable, which is why appropriate sun protection matters.
