What is the most effective treatment for melasma?

Melasma is usually managed — not permanently cured — with a personalized combination of photoprotection, suitable home care or medication, and selected in-clinic procedures. Laser alone is not automatically the best answer. The plan should consider whether the pigment is epidermal, dermal or mixed; the patient’s triggers; skin tone; inflammation; previous treatment; and tolerance for downtime.

Melasma

Usually symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jaw. Hormones, ultraviolet light, visible light, heat and inflammation may contribute. Recurrence is common.
